CHARLES MILCENDEAU MUSEUM

In Soullans, the Charles Milcendeau Museum keeps a low profile. Tucked away, almost hidden, in its green setting, it's well worth a visit...

The painter Charles Milcendeau (1872 - 1919) lived right here, in the heart of the Marais Breton Vendéen. He trained at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, with Gustave Moreau as his teacher. At the beginning of 1901, he travelled to Spain, where he was charmed by the small town of Ledesma. He continued to travel abroad, before returning to his native Vendée.

Charles Milcendeau drew all his inspiration from his own life. In the museum dedicated to him, you will discover more than 80 realistic works, illustrating the world of farmers and daily life in the marshes, as well as his flamboyant Spanish sojourns. A draughtsman first and foremost, he mastered the art of portraiture and interior scenes, before later turning to landscapes. You'll notice the variety of techniques used by the artist, from charcoal to drawings, paintings and pastels.

Your visit will vary between :

a museum space, housing previously unseen works by Milcendeau, from private collections, the departmental conservation service and other museums. In a nod to the painter, the paintings are displayed on coloured walls, recalling the palette of shades used by the artist.
the painter's authentic house, listed as a Historic Monument. He adorned every inch of it with paintings of Mozarabic inspiration, giving it an undeniable charm.
a space for showing films (translated into English and Spanish), one devoted to the life of the painter and his artistic career; the other dedicated to Jean Yole, a writer from Soulaine and friend of Charles Milcendeau.
interactive content, made available via a touch-screen application (available in French, English and Spanish), providing additional information on the artist and his work.
relax in the garden, on the Andalusian-inspired patio or at the picnic tables.

In July and August, the museum pulls out all the stops, offering guided tours, unusual evening events, concerts... And throughout the rest of the year, children can enjoy "P'tits mômes" workshops.
