Description

The island of craftsmen
Nestling in the heart of a green setting, Sallertaine is a land of inspiration for many designers.
Awarded the "Ville et Métiers d'art" label, this small village, which was once an island, is home to around forty artists and craftspeople in summer, ten of whom are open all year round. Push open the door of their workshop-shops and listen to them demonstrate their skills. Everyone will be able to find a souvenir or unique piece from their stopover.

The art of living... à la maraîchine
Given the isolation caused by winter flooding, the people of Marais were all the more appreciative of
parties and reunions. Each of these gatherings was marked by dance, a veritable local culture. The two traditional dances were the "courante", renamed the "maraîchine", and the "grand'danse", otherwise known as the "ronde". Not only dancers, the maraîchins also cultivated the art of singing and music, notably with the diatonic accordion. When it comes to food, there's a lot more to local cuisine than ham, mogettes and brioche. The cuisine of the Maraîchine region is full of surprises, combining seafood, local produce and forgotten vegetables. Tasty raw materials, sublimated according to recipes handed down from generation to generation in the families of the Marais Breton Vendéen. You can sample some of these recipes in the destination's restaurants.
